Project Goals - CNEX

A Clinical Information Network Exchange (CNEX) is being built to process data from legacy systems to create a virtual patient record.
Like many large, diverse health care organizations, UCLA has adopted information system technology as needs have been identified in patient care, education, and research. This practice has resulted in an array of legacy systems that use a variety of methods to store, retrieve, and display data. In order to facilitate the integration of , a Clinical Information Network Exchange (CNEX) is being built by UCLA. CNEX uses XML to communicate with backend systems and centrally process data to create a virtual patient record.

The record is virtual because it does not exist as a complete entity in a single location. Instead, data are stored in pieces on multiple legacy systems, which are queried to extract information about a particular patient when it is needed by a user, for example, a physician or nurse. Throughout the course of this IAIMS operations grant, CNEX will be tested and refined to optimize its efficiency and usability. As legacy systems are successfully integrated by CNEX, more features will be added to allow for customization of data viewing to meet the needs of clinicians, researchers, and educators.
